The top of the 2023 NBA Draft is one like no other. In any other draft, Scoot Henderson would be the sure-fire number-one pick. However, a generational talent from France has taken the media world by storm: Victor Wembanyama. Let’s take a look at this one-of-a-kind prospect and what makes him so special.

THE BASICS:

THE GOOD:

Victor Wembanyama is the most unique prospect we have ever seen. Wembanyama is also tasked with the unfortunate hype that comes with it. He can dribble like Bam Adebayo with Gobert-level rim protection. His mixture of size and athleticism is unprecedented and should be fun for Gregg Popovich and the Spurs to get their hands on. He is able to stretch the floor from beyond the arc but also has post moves to get open looks at the rim. He attacks closeouts well when defenders look to push him off the three-point line. Defensively, he is an elite rim protector. He consistently hinders shots at the rim with his lengthy wingspan.

THE BAD:

The only gamble teams are going to take on Wembanyama is health. The NBA has had players of this stature come into the league before (Ralph Sampson), and their careers are unfortunately injury-ridden. Although there are various highlights of him taking some incredible threes, Wembanyama is still a touch inconsistent from beyond the arc. Wembanyama only shot 27.8 percent from three this year, which should cause some concern for the Spurs. Despite the inefficiency from three, Wemby is a good free throw shooter at around 82.8 percent, so there are signs of life within the jump shot.

PRO COMPARISON:

We have a problem: Wembanyama doesn’t have a player comparison, because we have not seen anyone like him. My best comparison would be an upgraded Kristaps Porzingis on both ends of the floor. He is not a better shooter than Porzingis, but likes to step out and take the three.

CONCLUSION:

Victor Wembanyama should be the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He is one of the best, if not the best prospect since LeBron James took over the world from a young age. He has all the makings of a superstar player, and will likely be drafted into one of the most professional organizations in the NBA. The questions he does have are either fixable (his three-point shot), or unavoidable (injuries). Wembanyama is number one on my big board, your big board, and everyone else’s big board. I am incredibly excited to see where his career takes both him and the Spurs.
