Marco Simone Golf and Country Club plays host to one of golf’s most cherished events; The Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup is very different from most golf tournaments, as this is a team event of the best golfers from the United States and Internationally. Each team has 12 players with 6 being automatically qualified based on their OWGR and the other 6 being picked by the captain. Perhaps the biggest story surrounding this one is the pick of Justin Thomas who has been playing extremely poorly as of late and was still selected over guys like Bryson Dechambeau and Keegan Bradley. However, despite his poor playing JT has played in many Ryder Cups and has typically done very well. The format is all-match play with the main format being a four-ball match play with some single matches. The way four balls work is in each foursome there are 2 players from each team, and whichever player has the lowest score for the hole, their team gets a point. This evokes a completely different playing strategy for players and allows for more strategic selections of matchups. The United States Team consists of; Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Cantlay, Colin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, and Sam Burns. The International Team consists of; Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, John Rahm, Tyrell Hatton, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ludvig Aberg, Sepp Straka, Nicoli Hojgaard, and Robert Maclntyre. Overall, I think the international team has a slight edge, but with golf, there is simply no way of knowing how each golfer will play in any tournament, let alone a Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup typically is the tournament that the players enjoy the most as they have the opportunity to play for their country. The Ryder Cup time and time again delivers amazing moments, and more of those will be made this weekend in Rome.
