With the NBA in the heart of their playoffs, it is once again time for me to start my NBA Draft process. The Draft is a little over a month away, but to give you the most amount of content as possible, I have to start now. This year's draft is quite muddy at the top, and it has been heavily criticized due to the lack of superstar talent. Hence, I am starting my 2024 Draft coverage with who I think is one of the safest bets on the board: Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard.
What I Like
Like I said in the intro, Reed Sheppard is one of the safest prospects in this class. In his lone year at Kentucky, Sheppard put together one of the most efficient shooting seasons we have seen. He shot 53% from the field, 83% from the line, and a staggering 52% from three point land. At the next level, he should punish defenses for collapsing on drivers. Sheppard also boasts elite intangibles, both offensively and defensively. He has a solid feel for the game on offense, and uses his instincts well on defense to create turnovers. Sheppard also has very underrated athleticism, being able to contort his body at the rim and run in transition.
What I Don't Like
All of Reed Sheppard's tools are great. The main thing that gives me concern for the next level is Sheppard's size. At 6'3", 187 lbs, he is a little small for a guard. His lack of size could neutralize his creating ability. Speaking of that ability, his isolation scoring needs some development. At the NBA level, he should be a secondary ball handler, not a guard that you want initiating your offense or going to for buckets in isolation.
Pro Comparison
In terms of a pro comparison, I have seen a wide range of comps for Reed Sheppard. My best comparison for Reed Sheppard would be pre-Celtics Derrick White. At the peak of his powers, Sheppard could get to White's level right now, but any team would be happy to draft another version of Derrick White.
Conclusion
In a relatively weak draft class, teams should be looking for connective pieces. Reed Sheppard is just that. In a couple years, I can easily see Sheppard starting on a playoff caliber team. If there was a prospect I could bet on panning out, it would be Reed Sheppard.
